Lost Dauphin Park

Was the long-lost heir to France living in Wisconsin? The foundation of his home is visible in Lost Dauphin Park in De Pere.

"It was at this point that the history of Appleton became interwoven with the life of Eleazar Williams, one of the colorful figures that appear throughout America's early years. Williams was a soldier, a spy, an explorer, a linguist, an Indian leader, a Christian and one of many who claimed to be the Lost Dauphin, or the rightful heir to the throne of France. William's dream of founding a great Indian empire in the western territory led directly-- and accidentally -- to the creation of Appleton."

"The crown jewel of the National Football League, Lambeau Field is a year-round destination venue -- to be enjoyed by Packers fans in a variety of ways, on an everyday basis -- after undergoing a dramatic facelift that added a host of new amenities and attractions. The conclusion of the redevelopment project was marked by a rededication game, Sept. 7, 2003, against long-time divisional rival Minnesota."

Statue of Jean Nicolet

A monument to the French explorer's mistaken notion that he had landed in China, when in fact he was setting foot in America's Dairyland. He arrived, announcing himself with a colorful oriental robe and guns a-blazing, which may have taken the Indians a bit by surprise.

While fishing for rock bass on the Suamico River in the summer of 1974, Mike Baldwin and his mother spotted what at first appeared to be a large, strange-looking leaf floating in the water. A closer look revealed not a leaf at all, but an orange, pancake-like "sponge creature", six to eight inches across and covered with molted brown spots. It began to swim away in an undulating manner when approached. Before Mike could net the bizarre animal, it reached deep water, where it disappeared, never to be seen again.

Bryon Walter Hall
on the UW-Green Bay Campus
haunted
haunted
location:  Green Bay

"Did you hear the one about the haunted room on the third floor of Byron Walter Hall? Reporter Terry Anderson of the Green Bay Press-Gazette did, and he retold it on page D-1 of Sunday's edition. The story goes that a few years ago a resident was looking into the mirror and saw a ghost staring back at her. From there, the tale morphed into the building being haunted by the ghost of Byron Walter, or maybe by the spirit of a young man whose grave was supposedly disturbed during construction. Tom Haevers, Residence Life director, says students have fun with the legend, and once even printed up T-shirts that boasted of "surviving" the haunted building. "I've never seen a ghost there," Haevers told the paper, "but I can't say for certain there isn't one there."

"Or the time last summer when Boyd's sister, Ann, and brother, Patrick, were cleaning the restaurant and music started playing in a corner of the bar. It wasn't coming from the bar speaker. 'Annie freaked out, and she and Patrick ran out of the building and locked it up,' Boyd said."

Captain's Walk Winery
beer, wine or...spirits beer, wine or...spirits
location:  Green Bay

"As with other old downtown buildings, this one comes with ghostly tales. Though Koehler counts himself as a skeptic, he can rattle off odd episodes he and others have experienced. He plays them up for eager ears. One involves lights in the main room.
‘When we have ghost tours come in, almost everybody has one of the emf (electromagnetic field) readers, and I tell them they should be looking for some interference on (the west) end of the bar, and nine times out of 10 they do,’ Koehler said. ‘Perhaps we should call an electrician, not the Ghostbusters.’ "
