The Weird Wisconsin website ponders the multitude of Devil-related place names in Wisconsin.
"Another theory holds that early settlers often named places because of paranormal events. Something odd and beyond understanding was seen, and the newly arrived settlers named these places to commemorate – or to warn of – the event."

While fishing for rock bass on the Suamico River in the summer of 1974, Mike Baldwin and his mother spotted what at first appeared to be a large, strange-looking leaf floating in the water. A closer look revealed not a leaf at all, but an orange, pancake-like "sponge creature", six to eight inches across and covered with molted brown spots. It began to swim away in an undulating manner when approached. Before Mike could net the bizarre animal, it reached deep water, where it disappeared, never to be seen again. |

ghosts |
|
location: STATEWIDE |
The reports on this site are presumably fiction, using random Wisconsin place names in the stories listed there. Even so, you might get a kick out of reading them.
"A man's body with the head of a skunk may occasionally be observed pulling a body from the freezing water of Ashwaubenon Creek at night. It has been said that this precise ghost is the struggling soul of a long gone Green Bay person who lived here. No matter what, this is an antagonistic ghost that should be avoided."

In the book "Spooky Wisconsin", a tragic tale is told of a young woman who becomes the object of desire of a shape-shifting werewolf.
"Neither of them noticed the large white wolf crouched on top of the ridge until it leapt down upon Jean-Pierre, knocking him to the ground in one terrible, graceful movement. Jean-Pierre's astonished shout was cut off abruptly as the huge white beast with one dark patch on its muzzle ripped out his throat."

"Did you hear the one about the haunted room on the third floor of Byron Walter Hall? Reporter Terry Anderson of the Green Bay Press-Gazette did, and he retold it on page D-1 of Sunday's edition. The story goes that a few years ago a resident was looking into the mirror and saw a ghost staring back at her. From there, the tale morphed into the building being haunted by the ghost of Byron Walter, or maybe by the spirit of a young man whose grave was supposedly disturbed during construction. Tom Haevers, Residence Life director, says students have fun with the legend, and once even printed up T-shirts that boasted of "surviving" the haunted building. "I've never seen a ghost there," Haevers told the paper, "but I can't say for certain there isn't one there."

Staff and guests alike have experienced strange phenomena within the 1883 hotel and bar.
"Or the time last summer when Boyd's sister, Ann, and brother, Patrick, were cleaning the restaurant and music started playing in a corner of the bar. It wasn't coming from the bar speaker. 'Annie freaked out, and she and Patrick ran out of the building and locked it up,' Boyd said."

"Green Bay Ghost Tours is owned and hosted by the published author of “Haunted Green Bay” Tim Freiss. My interest in the paranormal has always been with me back to my earliest memories of childhood. I began researching Green Bay and found out that there were several haunted locations in the area. After two years of extensive gathering of stories, history and data, Green Bay Ghost tours was born. I think that you will enjoy being on the tour as much as I enjoy hosting them."

"As with other old downtown buildings, this one comes with ghostly tales. Though Koehler counts himself as a skeptic, he can rattle off odd episodes he and others have experienced. He plays them up for eager ears. One involves lights in the main room.
‘When we have ghost tours come in, almost everybody has one of the emf (electromagnetic field) readers, and I tell them they should be looking for some interference on (the west) end of the bar, and nine times out of 10 they do,’ Koehler said. ‘Perhaps we should call an electrician, not the Ghostbusters.’ "
