World's Largest Grandfather Clock
at Geppetto's Top of the Hill Shop
CURRENTLY BEING RESTORED
|
|
|
location: Kewaunee
|
roadside oddity / record holder / local landmark |
|
The 35-foot-tall clock has been standing at the entrance of the now-looking-rather-closed Top of the Hill Shop since 1976. But does it keep good time?
2013 UPDATE: The giant clock has been dismantled in order to perform a complete restoration over the winter. If all goes according to plan, the renovated clock will return in 2014, but in a new location: the intersection of Highway 42 and Miller Street. |

"At the Besadny facility, a fish ladder leads to holding tanks. Spawning fish jump up the ladder and land in the tanks, where DNR staff members can collect their eggs...The Besadny fishery has a partially underwater tank with plexiglass where you can see the salmon 'Up Close and Personal' both under water and during their last jump."

"Tug Ludington was fourth in a series of eight seagoing tugboats constructed specifically for World War II in 1943. After sea trials it was christened the “Major Wilbur Fr. Browder” by the U.S. Army. The tug's armament consisted of two 50 caliber machine guns mounted above the chartroom and pilothouse. Tugs were often strafed by enemy planes and submarines, but were considered too small a target to waste a torpedo on. The tug participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, towing ammunition barges across the English Channel. It eventually ended up in Cherbourg, France where it assisted harbor operations until being sent to Plymouth, England for the duration of the war."

In the Townships of Lincoln & Rosiere, there stands a pair of single-room shrines built in the yards of 2 Catholic churches. This area was home to the nation's largest settlement of Belgian immigrants, who arrived in the nineteenth century. |

One strawberry bears a mustache, yet the other does not. After hours of laborious study, I could determine no other indication of their intended gender. |

"The brick building was built in 1931 for Salkowski Petroleum, a Wadhams Mobilgas dealer. In 1976 the business was sold to Parkos Oil Company who still operates it today. Only two owners and Mobil products all those years. It is remarkably in very good original configuration for the most part. The owners care about the station's classic appearance. Take out those MPD's and put in a couple of Wayne 60's and you'd think you were back in time."

"Henry Diefenbach was a self-taught artist who began his journey in the world of art while recuperating in a local sanitarium....From 1959 to 1965, he created outdoor cement structures. He made seven house and tower structures that were tucked into the trees in his back yard along the banks of Silver Creek....In September of 2011, the property was purchased by Will and Stephanie Wasson, who agreed to donate the sculptures to Kohler Foundation. Once restored, the sculptures were gifted to the City of Algoma, Wisconsin, where they were installed in a park-like setting outside the library and city hall entrance."
