Cornucopia Yacht Club
location:   Cornucopia
non-existent exclusivity

This organization, created by Hale O'Malley, had plenty of members, but no yachts.

"... created the Cornucopia Yacht Club, an organization initially composed of just the two founders and whose sole purpose was to gain the traveling O'Malleys entrance to better marina facilities while sailing in far-off waters. Roger O'Malley thought the idea was so good that he ordered a supply of application forms for new members, and proceeded to sign up almost everyone he knew. Membership cost $2, and all dues went to put on an annual members' party at Bark Bay, where food and drinks were free. At its peak, the club listed over 700 members, coming from all over the region."

Washburn Brownstone Obelisk
location:   Washburn
roadside oddity

"This title was given back in 1892 when Frederick Prentice, president of the Prentice Brownstone Co. of Wisconsin, offered to supply a huge brownstone monolith for the Wisconsin Exhibit at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. He proposed to furnish this impressive one-piece structure at a size of 110 feet high, 10 feet wide at the base and coming to an apex of 2½ feet, which, according to Mr. Prentice, would eclipse the Egyptian Obelisk that measured 105 feet, 7 inches high. The stone was to be quarried from one of the Prentice operations and shipped by barge to Chicago. The Houghton quarry was selected because it had the best brownstone for the purpose, i.e., free from clay pockets, tints and streaks. A gala banquet was held when the stone was broken loose to celebrate Mr. Prentice's huge undertaking and generous gift. Unfortunately, the cut stone never left the quarry. Mr. Prentice withdrew his offer and the huge stone was cut and reshaped for use in other buildings."

Centuries of wave action, freezing, and thawing have sculpted shorelines throughout Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Some of the Great Lakes' most spectacular scenery occurs where these forces interact with sandstone of the Devils Island Formation to create extensive sea caves. Nature has carved delicate arches, vaulted chambers, and honeycombed passageways into cliffs on the north shore of Devils Island, Swallow Point on Sand Island, and along the mainland near the Lakeshore's western boundary. People come to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in summer and winter to visit the sea caves and witness Lake Superior's ever-changing handiwork.

In the book "Northern Frights", author Dennis Boyer tells of the spirit of the first human to perish in Lake Superior which remains to influence the living.

"He's often seen like that. Walking calmly on the water in the worst storms. Although I've heard of him running across the dark waters at night with a torch. Those tales go way, way back. Back past the Chipps. Maybe past the times of the Hurons and Menominees on the big lake. I don't think there is an older ghost story in all of North America."
