During winter months, the frozen waters of Lake Superior between the towns of Bayfield on the mainland and La Pointe on Madeline Island is plowed and used as a county roadway.

I'm sure that a few tourists must have attempted traveling this route on a summer weekend just after crawling out of the corner bar. Perhaps the "Ice Road Closed" signs should be posted on the shore during the unfrozen seasons.

The exterior is painted a shocking pink. The food is superb. The decor: pink flamingos, of course. Yes, you WILL find a flamingo or two if you look carefully enough inside Maggie's: on the walls, on the ceiling, on your table, along with enough other colorful miscellany to keep your eyes busy.

Madeline Island Historical Museum
"The Madeline Island Museum comprises the original museum and a modern expansion. The original museum is four historic log structures that have been relocated and connected together. It includes the only remaining building of the American Fur Company complex built at La Pointe in 1835, making it the oldest structure on Madeline Island. That building is adjoined to an old barn, the former La Pointe town jail, and the Old Sailor's Home, which had been built as a memorial to a drowned sailor. In 1991 the museum expanded by adding the Capser Center and, in 1995, the connecting Walkway Gallery."
