"The Old Firehouse & Police Museum is located in the last of Superior’s turn-of-the-century firehouses. Station No. 4 was built in 1898 as a replacement for the original East End Firehall, a wooden building, which burned down in 1896. The first floor of the new brick structure housed horses and the equipment they pulled, including Superior’s first steamer, the Charlie O’Hare. The men lived on the second floor."

Largest Ball of Twine in Wisconsin
(& perhaps the world)
location:   Lake Nebagamon
record holder

Largest Ball of Twine in Wisconsin
James F. Kotera, known as JFK, has been adding to the massive ball of twine in his backyard since 1979. His may be the world record holder, which is even more special since he is the sole builder of the 19,000 pound ball. He also runs the town of Highland's dump. Remember that the twine ball is on private property, so if you visit, be sure to call first.

Fairlawn Mansion & Museum
Paranormal activities have been reported, including the ghost of a former Swedish maid.

"This lovely mansion was once the home of the first Mayor of Superior. The family lived there for many years. The house is supposedly haunted by a former housekeeper. Legend states that she served the family for quite some time, and upon marrying, moved away. The housekeeper's husband later murdered her and her spirit returned to where she was most happy. The house is now a museum and from time to time her ghost shows up to direct lost people on tours. The building was also an orphanage until the early 1960's. People have reported seeing two little girls haunting the basement. "

The specter of a former maid like things her way.

"Yes, they had a ghost, she said, a woman who lived in one of the third floor rooms. Her theory was that the woman had been a servant, since that's where the household help always lived in Victorian times. Besides, the spook only became feisty when her room was out of order or was used for storage."

In the book "Spooky Wisconsin", author S.E. Schlosser weaves together a yarn taking place in the logging era that involves a number of the great Wisconsin characters of folklore: Paul Bunyan, Brimstone Bill, Sourdough Sam, Johnny Inkslinger and Ole Oleson.

"Johnny Inkslinger was in a terrible state. The logging camp was losing money to the curse, lumberjacks were quitting left and right, and Paul Bunyan kept shouting: “Johnny, find me the dad-blame person responsible for this curse!” every night at dinner. The first time he shouted at Johnny, the roof flipped end over end and landed on top of the barn. It took fifty men to fetch it down, and Ole had to make special iron bands to keep it in place when Paul shouted."
