roadside oddity

Springing Deer Statue
Another example of the elusive Giant Wisconsin Whitetail leaps over the sign at the Refuge. These deer always seem to be racing off at full speed instead of contentedly grazing.

Lost 'New County'
1879 – 1880
location:   all over Langlade County
lost county / ghost county

For nearly a year, Langlade County went by the highly imaginative name of New County until being renamed for pioneer Charles de Langlade in 1880. Luckily we did not see a succession of counties named 'Newer', 'More Newer', 'Even More Newer', etc.

North Trail Store
Ye Olde Muskie Inn
The O'Neil family decided to remodel the outside of their grocery store to match the original design built in 1923 when this store was part of an 'English Tudor Village' consisting of several buildings, including the Ye Olde Muskie Inn. Over the decades, some of the structures were removed or changed as needed. But thanks to the O'Neils, some of the historic charm has returned to Elcho.

A strange man seen in a Wisconsin bar?!! Unlikely!

"Next afternoon, while on duty in the bar Mrs. H saw a little man of strange appearance, 4.5 ft tall, enter the bar with a kind of "bouncing" gait; he motioned to her to come closer and addressed her in rapid English, saying, "You saw a bright light on Friday night."

In his book "Northern Frights," author Dennis Boyer tells of a businessman's ghost seen fishing by his friends.

"Here, the long-time residents say he is displacing the older ghosts. They say he has run off the ghosts that were present at every rapids on the Wolf. Temporarily or permanently? Stronger ghostly energy or just plain dominant personality?"

Dog House Bar & Grill

location:  Bryant  /  Deerbrook

Many paranormal incidents have reportedly occurred at this rural establishment.

"Pat then proceeded to the South end of the basement. On the way there she picked up on a name; 'Tommy' whom she felt was a possible child spirit. Pat also was drawn to an old high chair that she felt had some sort of spirit attachment but was unable to explain whom it may be. Pat proceeded to the fruit cellar where she explained to us that her heart was racing in that area. She also told us that she could see the spirit of a young boy who she explained had been lost. This child spirit was dressed in turn of the century clothing and had blonde hair that was cut in a bowl style. She said that the spirit was a very negative energy and that it kept asking where 'Tommy' was. Pat also told us that this boy had died as a result of drowning."

"Ghosts of America" Haunted Location Reports

location:  STATEWIDE

The reports on this site are presumably fiction, using random Wisconsin place names in the stories listed there. Even so, you might get a kick out of reading them.

"The ghost of an aged sorceress was witnessed standing by a wild road next to Antigo. When the onlooker showed up the ghost ran off. People argue that this ghost is the stressed spirit of a former Antigo local. Anyway, it unquestionably is a scary phantom that you wouldn't wish to meet at midnight."
