Bear Trap Falls
on the West Branch of Wolf River
location:   Keshena
waterfall(s)

Bear Trap Falls
"A description of this fall was written by Charles E. Brown after he visited this locality August 27, 1928. “At this pretty spot, now a tourist picnic ground, a clear spring fed spring flows over a low wall of red granite rock which is six or seven feet high. The locality in the forest is very attractive. The stream at the falls is narrowed by the rock outcrop, which extends out from the shore to a width of only 25 feet. The water in tumbling over the rock wall outlines white water in quite a perfect form of a white bear having a length of about 12 feet. This image can be seen at all times of the day but shows best at dusk or in the early morning.”"

Big Smokey Falls

Wolf River Dells (or Dalles)
on the Wolf River
location:   Keshena
waterfall(s)

Big Smokey Falls
Big Smokey Falls
"Here the Wolf River drops over 20 feet in a complicated cascade. There is an island in the middle of the falls. The nearer part of the falls is steeper and more impressive, but there is no easy place to really see it due to rocks and trees. If you wanted to get a really good view of it, you would have to be on the other side of the river, or on the river below the falls...In addition to the falls, the Wolf River Dells are about a mile upstream. Here the river drops over a number of small cascades and through some narrow rocky gorges."
– section from Go Waterfalling website
tan_arrow   From Keshena, head north on Highway 55 for 11 miles. Turn left (west) onto Dells Road. Continue past Smokey Falls to reach the Dalles.

Spirit Rock

location:  Keshena

Spirit Rock
Here the rock can be seen during construction of the protective wooden rails currently around it.
Spirit Rock
A historical marker sign has been added by the Wisconsin Historical Society since this photo.
"One night long ago a Menominee Indian dreamed that Manabush, a past founder of the Mitawin or Medicine Society; invited him to visit the god. With several of his friends the indian called on Manabush who granted their request to make them successful hunters. One of the band, however angered Manabush by asking for eternal life. Manabush, seizing the warrior by the shoulders, thrust him to the ground and said, "You shall be a stone, thus you will be everlasting." The Menominee say at night kindly spirits come to lay offerings of tobacco at the rock and if one looks closely he can see white veils among the trees. The legend is that when the rock finally crumbles away, the race will be extinct."
– section from Menominee Tribe Official Site

You can see how less defined the rock is since this photo was taken in the mid 1900s.

The reports on this site are presumably fiction, using random Wisconsin place names in the stories listed there. Even so, you might get a kick out of reading them.

Menominee Tribal Police Department

location:  Keshena

Menominee Tribal Police Department
Hmmm... 1) Would the tribe really allow the station to be built on an old graveyard? According to every horror movie, Native Americans are the only ones who know this is not a good idea.
2) I can't imagine the spirits of tribal ancestors sitting down at the old Smith Corona and pecking out a memo.
3) Well, if you build over an old Indian cemetery, who did you expect to roam your halls? Shriners?

"The police department is built on an old Indian Cemetery. During the night a typewriter will type with nobody around. Janitors have seen people wearing buckskin walking the hallways."

County Road V V
haunted road
haunted road
location:  Keshena

Well, since the road extends across the entire length of Menominee county, good luck figuring out which spots are the most haunted.

"When you drive down County Road VV at night, you can see eyes watching you as you drive down the road. Also, there are children that might come up to you and ask for you to play with them, if you don't something bad will happen. If you happen to hit an animal on County Road VV, something bad will happen to a member of your family."

Menominee Cultural Museum

museum

"The Menominee cultural museum is a “state of the art” environmentally controlled museum facility. The museum was built in the shape and form of the Menominee Grand Medicine Lodge. It was the idea of the museum staff to have the museum built in the manner because of the sacred and ceremonial Menominee artifacts that will be repatriated from other museums throughout the United States, which is made possible through the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, and will be housed in the museum."
