Jurustic Park
location:   Marshfield
roadside attraction / outsider artist / scrap metal art

Jurustic Park
Hidden alongside this rural road is a yard full of scrap metal sculptures, which includes dinosaurs, dragons, and many other metallic beasts. Steel-welding artist Clyde Wynia is a master storyteller when it comes to his creations, which hail from dark swamplands nearby. Also note the Hobbit House, which is used to display his wife's handmade jewelry. Jurustic Park is most definitely worth the search. Visitors welcome!

Robot Mailbox
aka Mailbot
gone
location:   Brokaw
roadside robot

Perhaps when the neighborhood brats drive by with the intentions of striking this mailbox with a baseball bat, the mailbot's heavy duty coil spring arms create a rebounding effect (thanks to Hooke's Law, I think) which returns the smashed mailbox with a devastating force, denting door panels and shattering glass and bone.

2013 UPDATE: The mailbot, at a glance, appeared to be absent from its normal roadside perch. Either it is gone permanently, undergoing repair, or simply delivering the mail to its master.

Cheese 'N' More Store
This building (shaped like a wheel of cheese with a slice removed) was home to a cheese store and gift shop, but the once-tidy shrubs that hug its exterior now stand to block view of its existence. Rondele Foods built the retail store in 1973, where it remained a popular spot to buy cheese products and Wisconsin souvenirs until Highway 53 took tourist traffic away from the area.

Kapliczki at the Intersections
Kapliczki at the Intersections
A practice that originated in Europe was brought to America by Polish immigrants. Small religious shrines or chapels called Kapliczki (singular "Kapliczka") were built near the intersection of two roads at first to protect travelers from evil spirits and later to give thanks to God. Some of central Wisconsin's Kapliczki are still evident in the forms of shrines and crosses. There is a greater amount of them available to see in Portage County.

Wausau Mine Company
A new, but still family-owned, Wausau Mine Company reopened in 2008 on the same spot where the old restaurant had been a popular and unique eatery for 28 years. The bigger, better building's exterior catches the eye with its intentional ramshackle style that would seem at home more in a place like Wisconsin Dells rather than in ginseng country. Inside, you may dine in a simulated cavernous gold mine (complete with canary cages), which is an update from the similar style of decor that made up the old building's Mother Lode Eatery and Rusty Nail Saloon. And the best part of all, the pizza is still excellent.

The moose is a dependable image when greeting visitors to the northwoods. One sight of the majestic beast confirms to Illinois tourists that they have entered Wisconsin's vast realm of log cabin architecture and chainsaw carved bears. However, the loon carving is no longer at Stony Creek Inn. A drive around the building showed no sign of the weathered waterfowl. Perhaps it flew off to spend its last days in loon-land Minnesota.

Foxfire Gardens
It was a perfect pairing. At the apex of a rural horseshoe-shaped road, across from Jurustic Park (see above), was the magnificent Foxfire Gardens, a 15-acre delight for visitors, green-thumbed or not. The conveniently-located set of attractions made for a worthwhile roadtrip until closure of the gardens in 2009. Until then, guests could wander about the pathways, ponds and a charming Japanese Tea House. The main draw to the botanical gardens was the variety of hostas, over 1000 in all.

Foxfire was started in 1983 by Dr. Stephen and Linda Schulte. They are a labor of love designed and built by the Schulte's. Foxfire Gardens was born in 1985 and obtained Botanical Garden status in 2002, as well as designation as an American Hosta Society National Hosta Display Garden.

Northern Center of the Western Hemisphere
It has been pointed out that the sign should read "Geographical" instead of "Geological". Also, "latitude" is mixed up with "longitude" (which is also spelled wrong).

"This spot in Section 14, in the town of Rietbrock, Marathon County, is the exact center of the northern half of the western hemisphere. It is here that the 90th meridian of longitude bisects the 45th parallel of latitude, meaning it is exactly halfway between the north pole and the equator, and is a quarter of the way around the earth from Greenwich, England."

"Located off County Road Y in the Town of Plover, this is one of the special jewels in the Marathon County park system. The Dells of the Eau Claire Park surrounds fantastic geological features created by the Eau Claire River. Ancient volcanic rock palisades and potholes carved in the rock by the falling water create a unique place at the dells and gorge. The river bisects this 190-acre park. A dam upstream from the falls creates an impoundment, which provides for a swimming beach. With 27 campsites and the adjacent Ice Age Trail, this park offers visitors a number of nature trails right on the banks of the Eau Claire River along with swimming beach, spectacular waterfalls and rapids. The beautiful rock formations are a magnet for summertime nature enthusiasts. Who can resist climbing among the water-worn rocks or cooling off in one of the many swimming holes?"

This house was the inspiration for the movie "Poltergeist"...or was it? Recent investigations dispute that idea, though the former owners stand by their strange account. (See Wausau Daily Herald links at right.)

location:  Stratford

In the late 19th century, an illuminated apparition would appear in the lands near the river.

"Mrs. Cline's father first saw the phenomenon on a homestead near the Big Eau Pleine River in the 1880s. The first encounter took place one night on his way home from a visit to his parents' farm about a mile from his own cabin. The will-o'-the-wisp suddenly appeared beside him and shadowed him nearly to his doorstep.
Mrs. Cline's parents eventually built a barn on the land and surrounded the yard with a timber fence. The will-o'-the-wisp never entered the yard once the fence was erected."

The reports on this site are presumably fiction, using random Wisconsin place names in the stories listed there. Even so, you might get a kick out of reading them.

"The ghost of an awfully mangled hunter pulling a dead deer is regularly seen gobbling an apple in Gooding Park at night. One thing is for guaranteed, it's a terrifying ghost that you don't want to meet on a dark night."

"As I was pulling out of the only road that leads to the road, to my left I saw something standing on the right side of the road up ahead. I stopped the truck, and sat there for about 10 seconds. Whatever this was looked my direction and took off across the road, towards the river, which was only hundred yards away."

Bearwolf Sightings
   mystery creature mystery creature
location:  Wausau  /  Stevens Point (Portage County)

Several creature sightings in Marathon County have left the witnesses at a loss to explain what they had seen. The animals were larger than wolves, but could not be dismissed as bears. Some descriptions of the beast suggested features of both animals were present, which could mean a new subspecies of cryptid has come to the fore in Wisconsins northwoods: the Bearwolf.
A sighting on Highway 51 between Wausau and Stevens Point as reported in the book “Weird Wisconsin” could very well be this mystery animal, who is akin to the creature seen near Holy Hill in Washington county.

"A very large animal about the size of a black bear crossed between the two separate cars. The speed that this animal had was incredible....I watched a four-legged, very dark creature jump a four-foot fence with ease after clearing the RV. I have lived in the Northwoods for sixteen years and have never seen a bear jump that high a fence."

The Woman in White

location:  Stratford

In the book "Ghostly Tales of Wisconsin," author Ryan Jacobson shares a story from a young woman who witnessed a particular apparition in her family's new home.

"“I don’t know how to say this without sounding crazy,” the friend explained. “But, well, never mind.”
“Tell me,” pleaded Anna, suspecting that she knew what her friend was unwilling to share.
“Something woke me up last night. A noise. And I think I saw a ghost: a woman dressed in white.” Anna’s friend also went on to say that the specter had walked upstairs and disappeared in a fashion similar to what Anna witnessed seven months earlier."
