Wonewoc Spiritualist Camp |
|
|
|
|
super-naturalism gathering spot |
|
location: Wonewoc
|
|
Psychics and mediums gather at this camp overlooking Wonewoc since 1877.
"Even the most casual passerby will notice the magnificent ridge, but only those very familiar with the area will know the outcropping's Halloweenish name — Spook Hill. Anyway, that's what the locals have called it since it became the summer home of a cadre of psychics and Spiritualist mediums in 1877. For their part, the hill's seasonal inhabitants prefer the name Wonewoc Spiritualist Camp, but they cheerfully accept the Spook Hill moniker."

Could this 1980 sighting have anything to do with Thunderbirds as depicted by the petroglyphs in the Nature section above? No, I didn't think so either...
"The Mauston birdman was another flying creature, this time six feet tall, yellow-feathered and beaked, but with human body shape. Sound like Big Bird? It was seen by an elderly grandmother, and the strange thing is that a few years earlier, a young girl in the family had told them that Big Bird came to visit her."

A shadowy figure was seen in 1961 howling in this cemetery located in the town of Armenia.
"Again, howling here. Howling there. Howling everywhere, ringing all around them.
Bernard sees the apparition first. At least six feet tall, hunched near a crooked leaning headstone, a black human-like shape without noticeable neck. The figure is completely black, a three dimensional shadowy blotch against the fading light."

Take County Road AA southward from Nekoosa (It runs along the west side of the Wisconsin River) for nearly 3 miles. AA will then turn off to the west, but keep going straight onto Plank Hill Lane. Continue on as Plank Hill changes into 26th Avenue North. The cemetery will be on your left.

Rural Mauston resident Ralph Hamm kills a kangaroo (or was it a wallaby?) in his driveway that was apparently living in his culvert. One of a series of strange kangaroo sightings stretching back to 1978 in Waukesha County and less than a year earlier in Iowa County. |

"The infamous Dell House was built in 1837 by a man named Allen. It stood near a place called the Narrows in a shady glen that was close to both a sandy river beach and a fresh water spring...Campers spread tales of ghosts and mysterious sounds like cursing, laughter, breaking glass and pounding footsteps coming from the old structure."

In the book "Driftless Spirits," author Dennis Boyer tells of the spirits left behind from an old battle between Indians and Vikings.
"But the so-called battle would be hard to explain if it didn't dove-tail with the Rocky Arbor Red Horn ghosts. Marjorie said that a Menomonie scout with the government men told the story that a combination of Indians and giant white men with red beards ran out of the woods at night into the government camp. Apparently the government men didn't stop running until they got to Green Bay."

In the book "Giants in the Land," author Dennis Boyer tells of a pig-faced humanoid that roams the woodlands near this northwestern Juneau County community.
"He lives out of cabins and shacks and such places. That's where his food comes from. That's where his clothes come from too. He knows the schedule of those weekend people. They don't seem to mind the few things that are missing. But I almost peppered is butt with birdshot after he took my overalls off the backyard washline!"

The reports on this site are presumably fiction, using random Wisconsin place names in the stories listed there. Even so, you might get a kick out of reading them.

In the book "Spooky Wisconsin," an elderly family member is escorted to his great reward by a man in black.
"I shook my head to clear it, and with each shake, I saw the man flicker into and out of existence at the corner of my eye. So I narrowed them until I was squinting, and then I could see the rider again. He was tall with a grave, dark face and hollows under his fathomless eyes. He wore an old-fashioned black suit that made him look like an undertaker and a top hat that made him look like Abraham Lincoln."
