Mediatrix of Peace Shrine

disputed holy shrine / roadside attraction

Mediatrix of Peace Shrine
Mediatrix of Peace Shrine
Mediatrix of Peace Shrine
Mediatrix of Peace Shrine
The shrine at Necedah is a subject of controversy within the Catholic church. It is supposedly the site of a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1949 and it boasts 14 religious and patriotic grottos.

POINT: "On November 12, 1949 the Mother of God appeared to Mary Ann Van Hoof, a farm wife and mother of eight children, outside of the small village of Necedah, Wisconsin. For 34 years messages concerning the youth, the Catholic Church, America, and the world were given to her. Mary Ann was told to 'Bring the truth to all people.'"
– section from the official website

COUNTERPOINT: "Necedah is the site of a 42-year old cult built up around a false apparition every bit as blasphemous as Bayside. A typical locution allegedly from Our Lady as strained through the mind of Necedah seer Mary Ann van Hoof would consist of fifteen minutes of shouted diatribe against the Godless Supreme Grand Master the Black Pope. (She meant Pope Paul VI.)...And so the cult of Necedah remains condemned locally and by Rome; all Catholics are forbidden to support it in any way under pain of excommunication; nevertheless drawing to its web a crowd of disaffected and disobedient Catholics of every stripe."

"The largest scenic rock formation in northern Juneau County, Petenwell Rock is named for a star-crossed lover, who legend has it, leaped to his death from this spot with the local Indian Chief's daughter, Clinging Vine. It is said that the Indian gods returned Clinging Vine to the rock where she stands today, faithful to the memory of her lover, Peter Wells, surrounded by magnificent bald eagles that nest and soar over their special place. The eagles are particularly evident here in winter when they fish the bountiful open water below the dam."

Wonewoc Spiritualist Camp
Psychics and mediums gather at this camp overlooking Wonewoc since 1877.

"Even the most casual passerby will notice the magnificent ridge, but only those very familiar with the area will know the outcropping's Halloweenish name — Spook Hill. Anyway, that's what the locals have called it since it became the summer home of a cadre of psychics and Spiritualist mediums in 1877. For their part, the hill's seasonal inhabitants prefer the name Wonewoc Spiritualist Camp, but they cheerfully accept the Spook Hill moniker."

Could this 1980 sighting have anything to do with Thunderbirds as depicted by the petroglyphs in the Nature section above? No, I didn't think so either...

"The Mauston birdman was another flying creature, this time six feet tall, yellow-feathered and beaked, but with human body shape. Sound like Big Bird? It was seen by an elderly grandmother, and the strange thing is that a few years earlier, a young girl in the family had told them that Big Bird came to visit her."

In the book "Driftless Spirits," author Dennis Boyer tells of the spirits left behind from an old battle between Indians and Vikings.

"But the so-called battle would be hard to explain if it didn't dove-tail with the Rocky Arbor Red Horn ghosts. Marjorie said that a Menomonie scout with the government men told the story that a combination of Indians and giant white men with red beards ran out of the woods at night into the government camp. Apparently the government men didn't stop running until they got to Green Bay."
