Giant Orange Moose Statues
Black River Fall's most recognizable landmark can easily be seen from the freeway, but it's recommended to pay a visit to the nearby businesses. While you're here, have some "Moose Wings" at the Orange Moose Bar & Grill (located in the hotel) or check out the used books above the Mocha Mouse while enjoying a hot beverage. A second orange moose statue can be found near there by the road.

Mysterious Figures in Field
Mysterious Figures in Field
On this long stretch of lonely road, two humanoid silhouette cutout figures stand near the wood line waving to the passersby. They look to be of the common kind than you can buy in the home & garden section of any major store. But why did someone put them here in the middle of nowhere, positioned so far from the roadway?

Any further information would be welcome.

Sampson Steinhaus
Yeah, it's a little exaggerated, but you get the general idea...
A project was underway for a retail complex to be built in the shape of a giant beer stein. The massive tankard would have contained 44 stores under a stainless steel roof, but it looks like the entire plan was scrapped. What a shame.

Merrillan Mystery Ball
PRIVATE PROPERTY
gone
location:   Merrillan
roadside oddity

What powers doth the Ball hold within? Perhaps it controls all the orange moose in the region and their ill-favored kin.

2009 UPDATE: It is with heavy heart that I must report the disappearance of the Mystery Ball. Did it disapparate by itself or was it removed by its owners? Did it even ever have owners? Was it here for evil or for good? Did it accomplish its purpose? Was its mystery solved? We may never know because I was too lazy to get out of my car and ask the guy who owns the place.

Wisconsin Death Trip

Wisconsin Death Trip
A grim period in central Wisconsin history was made famous by the photo-rich book authored by Michael Lesy. It doesn't exactly paint Wisconsin with a cheerful brush, but hopefully tourists will realize that the dismal imagery shown in the book was from over a century ago. Best not to read this book to your kids at bedtime.

"The book combines photos from the collection of commercial photographer Charles J. Van Schaick (taken between 1885 and 1915) with pieces from the area's newspaper, case histories from a mental institution, excerpts from appropriate writers, and Lesy's own Faulknerian accounts of regional history... Dead babies, diphtheria, suicide (by acid, gunshot, hanging, drowning, and, in one instance, dynamite), murder, armies of vagrants, arsonists, incest, and the mentally unbalanced (or, as one excerpt puts it, the "shack happy") fill the pages of Lesy's book, playing off Schaick's sometimes chilling, sometimes mundane, and sometimes just odd photos to powerful effect."

In the book "Northern Frights," author Dennis Boyer tells of an arsonist spirit that has wreaked havoc in the area.

"My uncle saw him as a blue flame shaped like a man. Many of the old duffers saw him as ball lightning rolling down paths on cloudless nights. One old boy even saw the fire spook turn from flame into a big rock and then after awhile turn molten and run down a crack in the ground."

A story from the book "Strange Wisconsin" tells of a couple who witness a strange-looking creature lurking through yards in town.

"It had a fat torso and longer limbs that were not proportioned right. If this creature were to stand up its legs would be like a dog's and unable to bend a knee straight. We would estimate the height to be no more than 5'6" at its tallest point. We got a very close look at this, close enough to know that what we saw was unexplainable and unbelievable."
