It stands in front of the Citgo gas station in all of its nearsighted glory. Truthfully it can be said that this is the only spectacled pink elephant statue in the state. However, the Roadside Architecture website (link at right) proves that our elephant is in no way unique as there are numerous of its kind roaming the American countryside sporting some type of eyewear.

Jimmy is Sun Prairie's answer to Punxsutawney Phil, using his shadowcasting ability to predict the likelihood of six further weeks of winter following February 2nd. They should train Jimmy to determine whether or not we'll have six more weeks of other occurrences, such as: Packers losses, gasoline price spikes, spring floods, woodtick migration, Illinois tourists, unfilled potholes, salmonella poisoning, cattle mutilations, cheese shortages, renegade farm animals on roadways, unapproved use of the urinating Calvin character as a window decal on pickups, property tax increases, and pit bull attacks.

Mustard Museum
The Museum is a showplace for the history of this popular condiment. It also sells quite a few varieties of the yellow stuff for your personal consumption along with many mustard-related novelties.

2010 UPDATE: The museum moved 15 miles away to Middleton in October 2009. The new location is at the corner of Hubbard Avenue and Parmenter Street in downtown Middleton.

2012 UPDATE: The building that once housed the Mustard Museum is now home to Wally Keller Tool Museum (see listing below).

Endres Manufacturing & Kappel Park
"When he moved to the new location he had made a promise to not let the new business become an eyesore to those entering the village. So, Larry took it upon himself to give the shop a Bavarian theme to reflect his German heritage. He also added a park on the south side called, “Kappel Park” after the chapel in the back corner. The chapel was a replica of the chapel his great-grandfather, John Endres, had built in the town of Berry, WI."

The Tin Man may have gotten a choice spot near the road, but Peg Leg the Pirate rules over the lawn. Creator Wally Keller has a good write-up about him in the book "Miracles of The Spirit: Folk, Art, and Stories from Wisconsin".

2009 UPDATE: Wallace "Wally" Keller passed away on August 4, 2009, due to an accident on his tractor. Thanks for the years of making a lot of folks smile, Wally.

2012 UPDATE: Wally's massive collection of antique tools is on display at the Duluth Trading Company store in Mt. Horeb (see listing below). But you can still see his sculptures in his family's yard.

"Waunakee" is an Chippewa word for "He lives in peace." According to lore, the town was named after an Indian who resided for a while by a nearby mill. A differing opinion is that is comes from an Indian word for "the fair and pleasant valley." Your preference.

The remains of a wind wheel.
2012 UPDATE: After a visit to the former home of the late Les Morrison (1907 - 2009), it is apparent that his wind wheels have not been preserved. The only exception was visible in a neighbor's yard. Hopefully a few others are still out there somewhere spinning in memory of Les.

"Les Morrison, a charming friendly man, has created a colorful roadside attraction for his lakeside community. Les worked with his hands assembling machine parts for thirty years and found an activity for his retirement that utilized many of the same skills. He recycles heavy plastic containers and bicycle wheels and turns them into "Wind Wheels" that come with a "lifetime warranty." A drive through his neighborhood attests to their popularity, and many have found favor gracing the yard environments of homes around the United States."

Roxbury Tavern Piano Burning
On September 18, 2005, a unique event took place behind the historic Roxbury Tavern. The old barroom piano was set ablaze, drawing a crowd that enjoyed an evening of music, food, drinks and, of course, the flickering flames emanating from the top of an E.P Johnson upright piano.

The construction of the bar itself may be an even more interesting story. The back bar was stolen from a paddleboat that had run aground in the Wisconsin River in 1893. No fooling. Also, this place offers chocolate-covered bacon.

"The Duluth Trading Company houses the Wally Keller Tool Museum. Wally Keller, a local retired machinist-turned-artist, had over 3,000 vintage tools, some dating back to the early 1800s--from early American to the steel forged tools of industry--from farms, blacksmiths, fire fighting and so forth. Each pegboard display panel is an artful collage of tools, arranged in a way that traces their ingenious development."

"‘You can't understand it. It's not in English. Something in Indian, I would guess. But sometimes you feel in your gut that you know what he's saying. "‘The ghost is a watcher. You probably don't know about that. A watcher stands guard.

They don't have to do anything. They're not in the habit of making people wet their pants. They just get into people's minds.’"

In the 1920's, The Grand Hotel was known as a Brothel and the king-pin of bootlegging in Stoughton. The Chief of Police, they say, committed suicide, jumping out of one of the top windows in the building. We have had things float off our shelves in from of some of our customers and Phil. We have also heard a lot of unexplained sounds like breaking glass, loud crashes, yet nothing is out of place."
