Cow Chip Throw
Cowabunga the Trojan Cow

"In 1975 the Sauk Prairie Jaycees, recognized the Sauk Prairie Area as the Cow Chip Capital of Wisconsin and organized the first State Cow Chip Throw. To get here, you have to follow the Stations of the Cross from the western side of St. Luke's Church, which will take you through the cemetery built on a sloping hill.  At the far side of the cemetery, pass through two metal turnstiles (which keep the nearby dairy cows off the trail), continue up the hill and into the woods on top of the bluff.  There you will find St. Anne's Shrine and a path to the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto.  Great view from the top.

Blue Spoon Creamery Cafe

This experimental restaurant is named for the blue plastic spoons used by Culver's Frozen Custard Restaurants.  The Culver's chain was born in nearby Sauk City and its main offices are right next door, making this an ideal location to try out a more high-end eatery with a wine list, Italian Gelato and incredible french toast.  It's kind of like if McDonald's decided to open an upscale bistro called "Grimace's".

"Lester Fry [1907 - 1996] was a hard-working, small town family man who never let good things go to waste. Lester collected old steel and iron wheels from farm machinery and the glass electrical insulators that were once found on power poles all across America.  Using ingenuity and a creative flair no one knew he had, Lester rigged a system for drilling and hanging the glass 'bells,' and he went on to decorate his yard.  Lester took great pride in the enthusiastic response that his project generated in neighbors and visitors from all over the United States.  Lester died recently, but his family still lives at his home with its sculpture-filled yard and continues the Christmas display each year."

"Dirk graduated from Sauk Prairie High School before earning his bachelor's degree of arts in Religious Studies from Seattle Pacific University in Washington. He currently works as a substitute teacher while also helping to take care of his family's dairy farm. Dirk loves fishing, dancing and blind dates. Having played basketball in high school and college, it is hands-down his favorite sport. Describing himself as energetic, funny and loud, he is most proud of being involved with helping disadvantaged kids reach their full potential. He lists Martin Luther King, Jr. and Larry Bird as his personal heroes because he believes they are two examples of effective leaders who led by example. Dirk's perfect day begins with an early morning fishing trip, followed by a competitive game of basketball until it's time to head for dinner at his favorite pizza place. Afterwards, he and his friends dance the night away. Dirk resides in Spring Green, Wisconsin. His birth date is June 15, 1976."
- section from the CBS official website (2000)

Dirk placed 12th in the initial season of Survivor (Survivor: Borneo/Pulau Tiga).  He was a physical asset to his fellow Tagi tribe members until, as the CBS website states,: "the young man's frequent expressions of his devout religious beliefs rankled a few of his fellow tribe members".  Whether that was the true cause of his being voted off is still disputable.  After the season was over, a controversy started up involving contestant Stacey Stillman's allegations that the game was fixed.  Dirk's testimony in that lawsuit alleges that some "suggestions" were made to him by producer Mark Burnett concerning how the game should be played in order to keep it interesting.  Was the game rigged?  I don't remember hearing how this all played out.  The show is still on the air, so who really cares?

Devil's Doorway

Bear Mound

"An ancient river cut gaps through the Baraboo Bluffs and flowed through them until its course was changed by the Wisconsin Glacier about 10,000 years ago. The glaciers plugged these gaps with rocks and dirt to form the basin in which the lake lies. When the glaciers melted, the river now known as the Wisconsin River developed its present course around the eastern end of the bluffs. Devil's Lake State Park is one of nine units of the Ice Age national Scientific Reserve.  Prehistoric Indians once inhabited the park and constructed a number of effigy mounds in the shape of birds and animals. In more recent times, Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) Indians had a summer fishing village along the north shore of Devil's Lake and a winter camp on the southeast shore."

"In Sauk County perhaps the most representative mound is that of a man, located in Section 28, Township of Greenfield, on a road appropriately named "Man Mound". Mounds in the human form are extremely rare, and though Man Mound is no longer intact, the majority of the figure can be seen by visiting the site in the county park, also named Man Mound."
