Norseman Statue

roadside oddity

"Velkommen Til Westby" reads the sign as you enter town.  The big annual event is the Syttende Mai festival.  You can buy gifts at the Uff Da Mart.  This community definitely does not hide its Scandinavian heritage.

Standing along the main drag is a large wooden Norseman, greeting visitors with a Norwegian flag yet keeping his axe visible as a gentle reminder that Norskies don't put up with any foolishness.

 Lost "Bad Ax County"
1851 - 1862

ghost county

"Vernon was created on 1851 as Bad Ax County (Changed to Vernon, 1862) from Crawford County. The County Seat is Viroqua. The County was named for a stream therein, tributary to the Mississippi. Bad Ax was a translation of the French voyageur term, La mauvaise hache, but the origin of the name is unknown. The inhabitants of the county felt that this name created an unpleasant impression; it was thereupon, at the suggestion of Judge William F. Terhune, changed to Vernon, implying the greenness of its wheat fields, arid carrying a suggestion of Washington's home at Mount Vernon."
