The old Montello Granite Quarry, which provided blocks of the finest red granite from 1879 to 1977, has been converted to a city park complete with waterfalls and a tiny church. The church is most likely placed there as a symbol of an actual church that once overlooked the quarry site until it was removed to expand production. |

This grizzly, coonskin-capped and buckskin-clad fellow has a pair of large oxen nearby in case some emergency plowing is needed before your meal. Another pioneer fellow, looking more like an old prospector than Daniel Boone, stands atop a sign for the restaurant on an adjacent street.
Westfield's motto is "where the pioneer spirit lives on." In late September, the town hosts the Westfield Rendezvous Days at the county fair grounds. Sounds like a good place to get a smoked turkey leg. |

Ken & Eunice Soda's yard has become a bit of a tourist attraction for the local devout. Rather than going with the tacky designation of something like "Paul Bunyan's rosary," the bowling ball-based creation is displayed in a tasteful manner, towering over the comparatively-diminutive statue of the Holy Virgin. A second bowling ball sculpture stands next to the driveway. |

barn art / public art |
|
Barn quilts may appear in several other Wisconsin counties but, here in Marquette, the colorful designs gracing the exteriors of farm structures are joined hand-in-hand with various other larger-than-life art projects that range from history-themed murals to a memorial for a locally-famous black bear.
The official website offers a map with locations of all quilts and murals. |

Highly visible on the Sonnenberg's barn is a stylized butterfly quilt design with a kaleidoscope of butterfly cutout figures fluttering away nearby. All the butterflies depicted are types seen on the property. |
