The Paulding Light
aka The Watersmeet Light
aka The Dog Meadow Light

unexplained phenomenon         mystery light
location:  Watersmeet, Michigan

Although technically in Michigan, it was impossible to ignore this site of mystery, as too many Wisconsinites have crossed into Yooperland to view it for themselves.  The Light is visible from a rural roadway, its source as yet undetermined.  Is it merely automobile headlights seen from a distance?  Swamp gas?  Reflections in the clouds?  Many who have gone to see the Light for themselves would insist that it cannot be explained away so easily.

UPDATE:  During a visit to see the light, a man standing nearby told of how the "true" Paulding light was not the stationary light seen in the distance at the end of the road, but instead it would rise up and swoop over the trees, sometimes coming closer to those who watched on the road.  When seen, the "true" Paulding light could not be misidentified as headlights or reflections, but considered something truly unexplainable.  This description has been repeated by other such witnesses.

From Eagle River, take Highway 45 northward, crossing the border into Michigan.  Continue past Watersmeet for 5 miles.
Turn left on Robbins Pond Road.  Follow the road for 1/4 mile until you see a dead end barricade.

"Shadows moved through the house, mumbling voices were heard, and the apparition of a woman was frequently seen floating through the French doors into the parlor. Other strange things went on in the house. Windows raised by themselves, appliances failed for no reason, and eerie noises echoed through the house at night. Then, while remodeling a closet, the couple found the mummified remains of a human corpse."
- section from The W-Files report

located on West Bay Lake, which is on County Road B (12 miles west of Land o' Lakes, 14 miles northeast of Boulder Junction).  There are two accesses to Helen Creek Road from Hwy B.  Take the westernmost one.  Turn left at the first legitimate intersection (it has two street signs for Helen Creek Road).  Continue until you see a sign for the addresses "7112 to 7146".  Turn left on that road.  When you reach the addresses "7112  7116  7120", look for a small driveway to your right.  If you reach 7124, you went too far.  The ruins are not clearly visible from the road if the leaves are still on the trees.

"The Stevenson Creek Chimney Mystery"

haunted

mysterious site
location:  Boulder Junction

Once there stood a three-story home in the woods.  It was built in 1905 by a man who wanted to harvest cranberries, but things did not go as planned.  The magnificent home was abandoned and eventually dismantled by the state for its log walls.  All that remains today is the massive three-story stone chimney, standing in the forest alone.

"People who have paid a visit to this place have said that you can still see people walking into the basement, kids playing by the creek, sometimes running in the tall grass, and windy spots around people when everything else is calm."
- section from The Shadowlands website

From Boulder Junction, head south on County Road K for 2 miles.  Do not turn east as K veers off in that direction.  Instead, continue south on County Road M.  After driving 1 mile on M, park at the State Forest Campground parking lot at Trout Lake.  Walk 1/3 mile north to the first hiking trail crossing the highway.  Go east for 1/2 mile until you come to a convergence of 4 trails.  Here stands the chimney.

"Ghosts of America" Haunted Location Reports
(take with a grain of salt)

ghosts
location:  statewide

The reports on this site are presumably fiction, using random Wisconsin place names in the stories listed there.  Even so, you might get a kick out of reading them.

"The phantom of a down-and-out gentleman was made out howling at the onlooker to go away in a rubber boat on Plum Lake. Other stories of this spirit have been conveyed. In any case, it's a scary ghost that any sane person wouldn't want to encounter."
