The Rhinelapus

location:  Monico
roadside oddity

"In the early 1940's, Guy Dailey found a tree on Walter Kuehn's land near the Monico Creek.  The tree was cut and dragged to Lake Venus Tavern.  Guy named it the 'Rhinelapus' because he thought it looked like a rhinoceros, elephant and octopus.  For sixty years children climbed and played on it, people took pictures and it became a Monico landmark.  After it was painted green to help preserve the wood, people began to call it the 'Green Monster'.  In 2002, the 'Rhinelapus' was given to the town of Monico.  The town is now responsible for its care and feeding."

"The Little Hodag"

mystery creature
location:  all over Oneida County

In the book "Giants in the Land", author Dennis Boyer tells of a dog-sized version of this legendary creature that still roams Wisconsin's northwoods.

To see more information & photos of its larger cousin, the Great Hodag, check out the Rhinelander page on this website.

"As far as what it looks like, it's pretty much like the Great Hodag.  Just a little lighter in color in the summer and kind of a silver gray in winter.  But it has the characteristic spearlike tail, spikes along the spine, shaggy hair, two horns, and short but powerful legs.  Kind of a souped-up armadillo on steroids."
