Pagoda Jewelry Store

location:  Cedarburg
unique architecture / roadside oddity

"It features a distinctive pagoda roof, highlighted by a cupola at the ridge. The flared eaves of the cupola echo the shape of the main roof At least 30 of these structures were built as filling stations by the Wadhams Oil & Grease Company of Milwaukee. The prototype was built in 1917 at Fifth and Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Milwaukee, and is now long gone. This one in Cedarburg was built in 1926. It is believed that the original occupant was William Schnable. It later became a Texaco filling station that was operated by Albert Eidenberger. Currently, the building is occupied as a jewelry store. This is just one of two such buildings still in existence."

French Motif McDonald's
complete with 12-foot Eiffel Tower

location:  Mequon
restaurant with character

This fast food restaurant displays French decor, boasts a 12-foot replica of the Eiffel Tower, and offers wine on the menu.

2006 UPDATE:  The Eiffel Tower is gone, which really dims the entire French theme.  Now the place seems like a slightly-nicer-than-average McDonald's.

historic location / roadside oddity

photo courtesy of Village of Grafton web site

Grafton's historical link to the blues industry is evident in the new Paramount Plaza, which contains a sidewalk "Walk of Fame" of Paramount Records artists made to resemble a piano keyboard.  A fountain and statue of 3 blues musicians highlight the plaza.  The Paramount Restaurant closed in 2008.

"One fourth of the nation's 'race records' were pressed in Grafton, WI. Over 1600 songs were recorded in Grafton between 1929 and 1932. Over 60 African Americans recorded their blues, spirituals, and even sermons in a 'make-shift' studio of an old chair factory, opposite of the pressing plant."

'Luke'
at Leather Strop Ltd

ghost
location:  Thiensville

"When Robin Olson works late sometimes he hears creaking footboards overhead. It's usually his wife, Gitta, getting home to their second-floor apartment just above the Leather Strop Salon.   Or maybe it's a visitor to a third-floor flat.  Then again it could be "Luke," a reclusive but congenial phantasm Olson says has inhabited the sprawling, fortress-like brick house with entrances on Main Street and Buntrock Avenue for 30 years."

Cedarburg Mill

location:  Cedarburg
historic building

"The Cedarburg Mill was built by Cedarburg founders Frederick Hilgen and William Schroeder in 1855 at a cost of $22,000 and was considered one of the finest mills in the midwest. The lower walls are 32 inches thick. The design is Greek revival. The clearstory and monitor roof were popular with eastern mills at the time since they added light and ventilation. This building replaced an earlier one built by Hilgen and Schroeder in 1844. Note that the main part of the building is 5 stories high. The section to the left is of the same style as the main section, but is not as high. Cranes had not yet been invented in 1855, so an incline several blocks long was built to carry material to the upper levels."

1876 Covered Bridge

location:  Cedarburg
historic structure

"This bridge was built by the Town of Cedarburg on petition of neighboring farmers to replace periodically washed out bridges. Pine logs, cut and milled at Baraboo, were fitted and set in place in lattice truss construction with 3 x 10 inch planks secured by 2 inch hardwood pins, eliminating the use of nails or bolts, and floored by 3 inch planking. The Ozaukee County Board in 1940 voted to assume the preservation and maintenance of this bridge."
