Peshtigo Fire Museum & Mass Grave
Peshtigo Fire Museum & Mass Grave
"On the evening of October 8, 1871 the worst recorded forest fire in North American history raged through Northeastern Wisconsin and Upper Michigan, destroying millions of dollars worth of property and timberland, and taking between 1,200 and 2,400 lives...Although the town was completely destroyed, many items weathered the fire's intense flames, and now these artifacts are preserved in the Peshtigo Fire Museum. Within this former church building rest various articles such as watches, books, coins and aged photographs - all antique pieces that tell the city's history. Nearby in the museum's cemetery lies a mass grave site where approximately 350 unidentified fire victims were laid to rest after the calamity. The site is marked by a stone monument and a metal plaque..."

Who knew that the Emerald City of Wisconsin was Wausaukee (population 573)? In this case, the yellow brick road is a block off of Highway 141 and leads to a former grocery store which now serves as the museum. Here you will find over 13,000 items consisting of Oz memorabilia, collectibles, replica props and costumes, literature, and promotional materials arranged by theme in several rooms. "Now regarding the Thunder Mountain in the western part of Marinette County: Thunder is a large bird like an Eagle, only much larger. And when this bird was created it was made to have power in order to defend us from the great serpents, who wanted to kill and eat the human race. It was also to moisten the earth for vegetation. • In the book "Northern Frights," author Dennis Boyer tells of the large variety of spirits left over from the 1871 conflagration.
• In the book "Spooky Wisconsin" is author S.E. Schlosser's description of the fire told to a child who has observed a ghastly specter.

"He catalogued the ghosts as he discovered them. Plenty of people would talk about them privately. They were pretty much what you would expect. Homesteader ghosts. Logger ghosts. Teamster ghosts. We have those by the dozens.
But there are some rarities. At Wilcox, we have four little girl ghosts—sisters I suppose—in singed nightgowns."

Black Fire Balloons of the Peshtigo Fire
"There were several strange phenomena that accompanied this fire, one was the large black objects resembling a balloon which revolved with great rapidity, advancing along the periphery of the fire. When these objects struck a tree or a house they would burst with a loud report and fire would stream out in all directions.
Mr. Laurance had one of the finest farms in the lower sugar bush and as the fire approached he took his wife and three children into the center of a large field. An eye witness tells of seeing them huddled together when one of these balloon like objects landed in their midst, bursting into flames and wiping out the entire family."

Bagley Road runs for almost 5½ miles along, for the most part, the Peshtigo River. A set of railroad tracks intersects the heavily-forested road at "Bagley Junction". There is very little information available about the phantom car, when it is seen, and who has seen it. But I would bet good money that it appears mostly to unsuspecting teenagers in the middle of the night.

Old School House
Here we go again. No real information seems to be available concerning the haunted schoolhouse. The now-defunct WIX (Wisconsin Paranormal Investigation Team) website had supposed the school's identity to be a building on the property of the Crivitz Area Museum. However, the Northern Lights Paranormal Research Society visited the museum grounds and found no structure that served as a schoolhouse. A schoolroom display is inside the museum itself, but that doesn't fit the bill. A more likely candidate is the old rural schoolhouse on High Falls Road. Having sat abandoned for some time, it appears to have been sold according to some real estate websites. It certainly had the look of a haunted school, but may already have been remodeled by the new owners.

museum

"The logging museum on Stephenson Island features artifacts of trading posts, Indian culture, logging and lumbering history, farming, fishing, etc. The Evanchek log cabin provides an authentic example of how out area's rural pioneer families lived. A recently actuired saw mill will find its new home here at the museum in late 2009. In addition to the museum and cabin, there is a small shop that offers souvenirs and toys."

Crivitz Area Museum
aka Crivitz Historical Society Museum
location:   Crivitz
museum

"The Crivitz Area Museum Complex is a great place to take a walk through the past and present of the Crivitz and Marinette County area. Travel through eras gone by and see exhibits of an old time kitchen, schoolroom, general store, doctor's office, communications, and many others. Browse through the variety of manuscripts, photographs and bits and pieces of local history. Enjoy the musical instrument and antique tools displays, and a collection of farm equipment both inside and outside. Add to this a tour of the historic logging late 1800's era log building, moved from the Lake Noquebay area and reassembled next to the museum, with a miniature handmade display of an actual logging camp, and many, many artifacts and photos of the logging industry of bygone years."
