Mars Cheese Castle
location:   Kenosha
business with character / cheese pride / unique architecture

Mars Cheese Castle
photo contributed by Jeff Dallas
Mars Cheese Castle
Mars is a large tourist-baiting, castle-themed (inside & out) cheese & gift store with its own bakery, deli, restaurant, and cocktail lounge. The business was founded in 1947 by Mario & Martha Ventura, the latter of whom once inherited a castle in Villa Rocca, Italy. That particular castle is now a resort, but the one that you will find off of I-94 is supposed to serve some of the best bloody marys (or is it 'maries'?) around.

2011 UPDATE: As of March 4, 2011, Mars Cheese Castle has relocated into an amazing new castle-shaped building very close to the old location. We also have an unconfirmed report of a cheese mouse statue within the premises.
Mars Cheese Castle
The old store. The good news is that the old sign that has become so familiar to locals & tourists alike has been retained.

These two knights have apparently been commanded to stand guard over the royal family's Styrofoam containers in the old store.

Large Carved Wooden Hand Throwing a Ball
Large Carved Wooden Hand Throwing a Ball
This carving is located at the intersection known as Brass Ball Corners, so named for the Brass Ball Tavern that once occupied the spot. The tavern, which dated back to 1855, was originally decorated with a "gilded wooden ball' that gave it its name. That original ball is gone, but a 20" gilded metal replica was hung over the intersection for a time. The 2nd ball was actually an aluminum buoy from a mine washed up on a Florida beach.

The phantom of a decapitated nun is still around, as are other reported spirits.

"In 1878, the Sisters of St. Mary took over the seminary under the leadership of Sister Margaret Clare, a stern nun who ruled the school with an iron hand. Many of the stories about ghosts at the school concern her. Legend has it that she either tripped on her habit and fell, or was pushed, to her death from the school's observatory tower. However this proved to be only a legend that had been passed on from student to student as Sister Margaret actually died in 1921 from a chronic illness."

Paranormal activity is reported in the old theatre.

"As I turned, I caught a glimpse of movement toward the back of the auditorium (I was standing next to the stage). I focused on the area, and saw a man hurrying down the row of seats, as though headed toward the exit at the back of the room. He was in the third row from the back, moving at a pretty good pace, and was touching the back of each seat to his left as he passed it, the way you might do when moving down a narrow row of seats....I could see the row of seats on the other side of him through his body. I watched him pass in front of five or six seats, then, all of a sudden, I didn't see him anymore."

He has seen the creature cross the road on all fours, as well, and estimated it was at least five feet long from nose to rump, and its back stood almost three feet off the ground. It appeared unafraid of him, and stared at him with yellow, glowing eyes.
